What Do You Mean?

Function: Song Words: 51 Duration: 2:00
Sample:
Aim: Introduce how to demonstrate lack of understanding.
Uh? Uh? Uh?
Wot? Wot? Uh? Wot?
What do you mean?
What do you mean?
Uh? Uh? Uh? Uh?
Wot? Wot? Uh? Wot!
What do you mean?
What do you mean?

What do you mean?
What do you mean?
What do you mean?
What do you mean?
Wot? Wot? Uh? Wot!

Usage:

I usually wait for a genuine situation to occur where no-one understands what I am saying. One way to create this is to give a new instruction, for example ask a child to "Scribble on the board" When everyone looks confused that is the time to have a brainwave and use the song.

Teach a gesture for uh and a gesture for wot (a parrot flag is useful for this). For example, pull your chin and look quizzical for uh and shrug with both hands for wot. Practise so that children can name the gestures when you do them.

Shadow the main verse, that is rather than sing with the track repeat each word after it is sung on the track. The chorus is sung as usual. There is a short interlude. This is a good time for trying out different gestures.

After the song remember to return to the original situation and see if any child will use a gesture or a say uh or wot.

Notes:

Being able to show lack of understanding is a very important skill. Keep reintroducing the song everytime an opportunity presents itself. It's very possible to start the song, fade out on the first chorus and then wait for someone to give you a sign. Over time children will need less prompting provided that they feel safe. The importance of feeling safe cannot easily be overstated.
